Minneapolis, MN – Children’s Theatre Company (CTC) is excited to bring Animal Dance, a world premiere production specially designed for preschool age children. This new work developed by renowned post-modern choreographer and dancer, Ann Carlson stars real baby goats, chickens, dogs, bunnies, goldfish, and a tortoise onstage. Carlson will utilize abstract narrative and post-modern gestural movement alongside the animals moving in their natural way. For over 30 years, Carlson has made a niche specialty in the dance world of using dance to illuminate the intersection between human and animal. Animal Dance seeks to demonstrate for an audience of very young children, the importance and majesty of witnessing the purely natural behavior of animals. It is a gently unpredictable performance, different each time as the dancer takes cues from and with the animals.  She gained worldwide appreciation for her work, Animals, of which this piece is inspired by, and has been described as work that defies description, scale, and category. She was recently awarded the prestigious Doris Duke Artist Award in Dance in 2015.

“I think of Animal Dance as planting a tree, offering new roots for the very young viewers as they grow into a compassionate citizens of the earth,” states Carlson. “The theatrical environment is an opportunity for exquisite attention. Animal Dance is based on the commitment of working with the animals as sentient beings, deserving of our utmost respect and consideration; we are not asking them to "perform" tricks for us, or act in a certain way.  Animal Dance creates a performance where everyone can fearlessly be themselves, thus imagining a world where two and four footed creatures share the earth with empathy and joy.”

Hamline University faculty and author of Connecting Animals and Children in Early Childhood, Patty Born-Selly, is particularly enthusiastic about this new work as it relates to the deep research on the intersection of animals and young children she has conducted. She states, “Animal Dance is a celebration not just of animals, but of the playful curiosity and reverence that adults and children feel for them. It will provoke questions, ideas, and a feeling of joy. Ann playfully, gently, and thoughtfully interacts with animals in many of the same ways that children do: with curiosity, a sense of wonder, and reverence for animals.”

What do kids (baby goats) and kids (not-so-baby people) have in common? World-renowned choreographer and performance artist Ann Carlson will dance her way to the answer with the help of some curious goats and their animal buddies in this brand-new piece developed specifically with preschoolers in mind. It’s a story of the similarities we share with our animal friends in the quest for discovery and ultimately, understanding. So stomp your hooves, clap your paws, and expect the unexpected.

Animal Dance runs March 22 through May 1 on the Cargill Stage. Best enjoyed by preschoolers. For more information, visit childrenstheatre.org or call the Ticket Office at 612.874.0400.
