Happy International Waffle Day

Happy Waffle Day! Yes, there's a holiday for everything. But who can be upset over the celebration of waffles?! March 25 is marked as International Waffle Day. Legend has it that waffles originated in Europe in the 15th century, when a hungry man decided to cook his usual Sunday pancakes between two patterned iron hot plates. Voila! The waffle was born.

Cornelius Swartwout patented the first waffle iron in 1869 here in the US. He created the first stovetop waffle iron with wooden handles so hands were no longer being burned in the process (thanks Cornelius!). Since then, we've been enjoying the square, syrupy goodness for breakfast, snacks, dessert and everything in-between.

How will you celebrate Waffle Day? Hopefully with waffles of course! Mix up the toppings. Experiment with syrups. Try a savory waffle sandwich or pizza. Whatever you do, have fun and enjoy the yumminess that is about to happen.
